Champaign-Urbana is a sort of paradox in that Champaign translates to open field in French and Urbana is a word to describe cities in Latin. I was five to ten miles south of town one afternoon, but I could still the tips of buildings peeking over the tree line. I wanted to recreate a view which was theoretically possible. The scarecrow was an afterthought: I knew I needed to have something in the foreground.

I took numerous shots as bus #2104 passed by the ARC. I had an image of the background with and without the bus. I drew the exposed interior of the bus using Adobe Illustrator since there were no such images of the newer MTD buses online. To make the edit funnier, I added traffic cones and an NIS display. At the time, I still hadn’t figured out how to make shadows look realistic.

It took trial and error to get the LEDs to look right. Real Train Trackr maps are based on subway systems with fewer lines and fewer unique colors. With this project, I had to worry about Bronze and “Raven” colored LED lights. I drew the “Champaign – Urbana” from scratch.

I captured the featured bus at Round Barn Road, a week before I began editing. Bus #2416 was one of eight new buses which were recently delivered to MTD. For the first time, I tried altering the perspective of a three-dimensional object. For this project, I recorded and sped up footage of my editing process.
